Program History


1998

Photo of dental workThe St. David's Dental Program begins as the Central Texas Children's Dental Health Collaborative, a school-based screening and sealant initiative with one part-time dentist and an assistant.


2000

First mobile dental van (Theo 1) is added through a loan agreement with the City of Austin. Foundation clinicians perform restorative care on the dental van and City hygenists apply sealants in the schools. Presently, Theo 1 is shared between the St. David's Dental Program and the City of Austin.


2002

Theo 2 is purchased through a grant from the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation.
A second dentist and assistant are hired.


2004

A third mobile dental van is added through a loan agreement with the Department of State Health Services.


2005

The first Oral Health Educator is hired and begins in-class oral health presentations thanks to a grant by the Favrot Foundation.


2006

 

The Foundation purchases a new Theo 3 to replace the exhausted state-loaned van.


2007

Dental van
Theo 4 and Theo 5 went into operation. Theo 4 is funded by the Topfer Family Foundation, the Still Water Foundation, and St. David's Community Health Foundation Leadership. Theo 5 is funded by the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation. An additional grant from the Favrot Foundation allows thehiring of a second oral health educator.

2008

The program is now operating 4.5 vans staffed by five full-time dentists, a dental hygienist, and eight dental assistants. With the expansion into Pflugerville and Round Rock, the program now serves over 90 elementary schools in six different school districts.
