In August 2006, 900 local children received free vaccinations at a one-day immunization clinic at People's Community Clinic. The immunization program is the result of a collaboration involving the Children's Wellness Center, People's Community Clinic, Travis County Medical Alliance, the University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing, and St. David's Community Health Foundation.
This immunization collaboration provides nursing students from the University of Texas at Austin with the opportunity to receive hands-on training in administering immunizations to children, along with course credit for their participation. In total, participating staff and nursing students administered 2,181 immunizations to 900 children. An additional 325 children's immunization records were reviewed by nursing experts and determined to be up-to-date, therefore not requiring any additional immunizations.
